Charlie Lucas

b.1951, AL

Lucas, one of 14 children in a family of sharecroppers, left home at age 14. After a back injury, and with $10 to his name, he prayed to God to give him a special talent. Starting with welding rods, he began making art and became internationally known for both his metal sculpture and his paintings.
