From Newport News, VA, Rev. Johnson preached the gospel from his own home/tabernacle, and played some wild “sacred steel” guitar. Though historical and religious figures are portrayed in his work, his most prolific subject matter was that of the myriad "church ladies" that he painted on cardboard and wood, and hung all over the walls of his home.
Here’s a clip featuring photos of Rev. Johnson’s environment, and audio of one of his earlier gospel recordings. Enjoy!!!
