Sarah Mary Taylor

(1916-2000) Yazoo City, MS

Sarah Mary Taylor combined her wonderful sense of color and rhythm with a new angle on traditional applique quilting, creating a body of work that has influenced many other quilters including Otesia Harper, and May Liza Jackson; she learned a lot from her mother, Pearlie Posey, and her aunt, Pecolia Warner, two fabulous and well-collected quilters in their own right. One of Taylor's "Hands" quilts was commissioned for use in the film adaptation of The Color Purple. Her work is found in many private and museum collections.
